Happy Diwali! Tonight, we are excited to host our annual Diwali Night against the Carolina Hurricanes. Please see below for more details about the occasion and game:
- Diwali is an important religious celebration that originated in India and is celebrated by Hindus, Jains and Sikhs (Bandi Chhor Divas) all over the world
- Diwali means “row of lighted lamps” with light symbolizing the triumph of good over evil, prosperity over poverty and knowledge over ignorance
- The annual five-day celebration of Diwali will take place from October 22-26 this year. On the main day of Diwali, on October 24th this year, families gather together to worship, followed by feasting, lighting of diyas (oil lamps) and candles, and fireworks
- The Canucks game on October 24 will be the team’s sixth annual celebratory game for the local South Asian community, headlined by Punjabi singer and songwriter Jazzy B. There will also be an outdoor Diwali Party on the Plaza, a Diwali Market on the arena concourse, special performances and guests, festive decor and more
- To commemorate Diwali, the Canucks for Kids Fund will be donating $20,000 to Guru Nanak’s Free Kitchen, a Sikh-faith led volunteer organization supporting Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside
- Players will be wearing Diwali warmup jerseys designed by South Asian artist Sandeep Johal, and these jerseys will be available for auction at vanbase.ca, with partial proceeds being donated to Guru Nanak’s Free Kitchen. Additional merchandise is also available in store and online
